UAE becomes 70th member of ITA

DUBAI — The UAE became the 70th member of the Information Technology Agreement (ITA) after the WTO participants of the Committee of Expanding Trading in IT Commodities gave approval to UAE's application that was submitted in June 2006 based on a Cabinet decision no. 487/1/2004, said the Director of the World Trade Organisation Affairs and Free Trade Agreements at the Ministry of Economy, Juma Al Kait

The ITA agreement covers four main categories of commodities including computers (scanners, monitors, hard discs, power supplies), Telecom products (including modems, pagers and other communication equipments), Semi conductors (including chips and other components) and equipment machinery to build semi conductors and software such as hard discs and compact discs.

The agreement is based on releasing trading in IT commodities of customs fees and other ODCS including three main principles that a member country should abide by offering unconditional obligations and commitments to eliminate customs fees on all IAT enlisted commodities and reduce fees on all commodities to zero per cent .
