Toxic vessel allowed into Suez Canal

PORT SAID — An asbestos-laden French warship has been allowed by Egypt to enter the Suez canal on its passage to India for dismantling, after a week of controversy, Egyptian officials told journalists yesterday.

The decommissioned French aircraft carrier, the Clemenceau, was prevented from sailing through the Suez canal for a week because of fears over the amount of toxic chemicals it contained, before Cairo ruled it was safe enough to make the voyage.
