The UAE's Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) on Sunday clarified that there had been no changes to the country's Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) rules.

According to a report carried in Arabic daily Al Ittihad, only authorised service providers, namely Etisalat and du, were allowed to provide such services.

The TRA statement comes after reports last week that several users in the UAE were able to make WhatsApp voice and video calls.

HiU Messenger, Botim, Voico UAE and C'Me are some of the apps via which UAE residents can make voice and video calls over the internet after subscribing to them via the telecom operators for a monthly fee.
