Pakistan on Sunday formally signed a participation contract with Expo 2020 authorities. The site will likely be retained after the event as a legacy and to show Pakistan's culture, senior government officials said in Dubai.

Kamran Khan, commercial secretary at the Pakistan Embassy in Abu Dhabi, said 'Emerging Pakistan' has been proposed as the pavilion's theme where the country will promote investment opportunities, tourism potential, important export segments, sustainability, digital economy and e-governance.

"A special section for women and tech entrepreneurs and prominent Pakistanis who have succeeded in different segments of social and educational life will also be exhibited at the pavilion," Khan said during a presentation about the Expo 2020.

"Pakistan pavilion is in the general area outside the three thematic districts, therefore, we can choose an overarching theme covering all three sub-themes of Expo 2020," he added.

Pakistan has opted for a large plot measuring 3,449.9 square metres. It was allocated in August 2018 near the Opportunity Pavilion.

"The organisers have focused not only on event but also on a meaningful legacy. There is a possibility that the Pakistan Pavilion would be retained as Pakistan Centre in the legacy phase," Khan said.

He revealed that the pavilion is currently in the design stage and urged Pakistani companies to register to bid for Expo 2020 projects. There are around 13,000-plus companies registered, including 131 Pakistani companies.

Earlier, the contract was signed by Moazzam Ahmed Khan, Ambassador of Pakistan to UAE in his capacity as Commissioner-General, Expo 2020, and Sultan Al Shamsi, assistant minister, Ministry of Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by Reem bint Ebrahim Al Hashimy, Minister of State for International Cooperation and Director-General, Expo 2020, and Abdul Razak Dawood, advisor to Pakistan Prime Minister on Commerce, Textile, Industry & Production and Investment.

The signing has formally kickstarted activities for construction of the Pakistan Pavilion at the Expo 2020 site. To be built on a large plot in the Opportunity District, the pavilion shall be based on the 'Emerging Pakistan' theme, with representation from all provinces.

Dawood said that Pakistan attaches great importance to its relations with the UAE and that it looks forward to making its participation most meaningful in line with the Expo theme of 'Connecting Minds, Creating the Future'. He said the Expo 2020 is not only a UAE specific event but also an exposition of the region.

"We have already started the design phase of the Pakistan pavilion, reflecting the true potential of Pakistan. The Prime Minister has constituted a high-level steering committee with representation from private and public sector stakeholders for effective participation," Dawood said.
