Ahmed told a private television channel that the talks were continuing.

“Only a sketch has been formed and it has not yet been finalised,” he said.

He said the PPP wanted the elections to be held in 2005, but the government was determined that they would be held only in 2007 as scheduled — after the provincial assemblies completed their tenure.

Asked whether he thought the current visit of Benazir, to the US would bring about a change in the Pakistani political scene, he said any change would come only after the general elections.

Ahmed told a Press conference in Lahore on Sunday that the government was trying to reach a ‘broad understanding’ with the opposition parties, but this would take some time, Daily Times newspaper reported.
