DCCI discusses FTA with US trade official

DUBAI - Obaid Humaid Al Tayer, President of Dubai Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI), yesterday held talks with Frank Mermoud, Special Representative of Trade and Business Affairs at the US State Department.

Also present were Abdulrahman Saif Al Ghurair, First Vice-President of the DCCI, Dr. Anwar Gargash, Member of Board of Directors, Abdulrahman Ghanem Al Mutaiwee, Director-General, Nizar Sardast, Adviser and Tariq Lootah, Director of Trade & Industry Development Department. Gibson Davies, US Consul-General and Michael Carver, Economic Officer, also attended the meeting.

The American delegation learnt about the chamber's opinion on the proposed Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and investment opportunities between the UAE and the US; its benefits, along with the negative consequences that it might produce. The DCCI stressed on having equal benefits and the principle of similar treatment within all aspects of the Agreement in order to guarantee benefit for all members. The chamber also clarified its views concerning the issues related to the law of trade agencies and labour unions.

Several meetings on ministerial level had been held between the UAE and USA and joint business council was created to facilitate cooperation and exchange of views.
