Athletics program opens with China winning gold

The 21-year-old World Cup champion finished more than a minute ahead of teammate Chu Yafei in 1 hour, 20 minutes, 50 seconds, while Kim Hyun-sub of South Korea was third.

A group of six walkers, including the three medalists and Commonwealth Games third-place finisher Harminder Singh of India, established the leading pack through the first eight kilometers.

There were 23 gold medals set to be presented Sunday on the ninth day of competition at the Asian Games, including singles finals in squash and the first medals in Greco-Roman wrestling.
