Ford are set to unveil their aluminum F-150 pickup at next month's Detroit auto show, and plan to show off the vehicles combat machines.

Bloomberg reported the automaker has asked Alcoa Inc., which makes aluminum blast shields for battlefield-bound vehicles, to contribute military-grade metal to their display.

Sources have told media the next generation F-150 will be based on the Atlas concept design.

Manufacturing experts say the roll-out of the pickup will not be an easy task as it will require many changes to how Ford truck bodies are made on the assembly line.

IHS Automotive estimated that Ford’s truck factories will need to take six weeks break to get everything in place.

Experts are touting the truck’s fuel efficiency as one of the major draw cards. The use aluminum cuts the weight, and therefore, fuel consumption.

The truck debuts at the Detroit Motor Show on January 13.
