Worker run over during road work
UMM AL QUWAIN - A 32-year-old Bangladeshi worker succumbed to his injuries on Sunday afternoon, following a run-over accident in Umm Al Quwain.
According to a senior officer, the victim, identified only as M.S., was hit by a heavy vehicle used in paving the bypass road being built at the Muhazab area at 1pm. “The accident was occurred due to the driver’s careless driving as he did not notice the worker, who was cleaning and spreading the rubbles on the road,” said Lt. Col. Khamis bu Haroun, Director of the Operations Room of the UAQ Police.
The police, ambulance and rescue teams rushed to the scene and shifted the man to the hospital where he died at the entrance. “All motorists and drivers of heavy and light vehicles are urged to abide by traffic laws,” said Lt. Col. Khamis bu Haroun. Earlier this month, a car driven by an Emirati woman ran over an eight-year-old boy, also Bangladeshi, on the Shaikh Rashid bin Said Al Maktoum road.
The traffic police report said that the boy crossed the road unexpectedly and all of a sudden with some friends at a no-pedestrian crossing area.
Meanwhile, Major Saeed bin Aran, Director of Traffic and Patrols Department, said the emirate saw a drop of 50 per cent in traffic accident deaths. “Only 15 deaths were recorded in 2011 against 30 in 2010.”
