A 33-year-old Nepali national, allegedly worn down by problems of debt back home, committed suicide in the Al Merashid area of Fujairah early morning on August 5.

The deceased worked as a mechanic in a reputed engineering and agricultural supplies company based out of Dubai. The father of two has been working in the company since 2010, and according to sources close to the victim said he wasn't given his salaries for three to four months and was suffering from severe financial stress. Sources revealed that the worker used to live in a shared accommodation villa, and the victim hung himself in a storeroom.

"He was under a lot of stress because he had several unpaid debts back home. We thought he was joking about his situation. Didn't think it was this serious. All of our salaries have been delayed," said his colleague.

Human resources officials at the company also confirmed that there was a slight delay in payment of his salaries. However, the company spokesperson confirmed to Khaleej Times that everything was being done to repatriate his body back home with all pending dues, leave salaries, and his gratuity. "The amount will be deposited into the family's account," confirmed the company HR manager.

The HR manager added, "Just last year he took an emergency leave to his home country to see his newborn baby. We are waiting for police to give us his death certificate and complete other formalities so that we can send his body home to Kathmandu."

Preliminary investigation by Fujairah Police confirmed that the incident took place and a further investigation is still ongoing.
