ABU DHABI - With the successful registration of the residents by the Emirates Identity Authority (EIDA), the work permits (labour cards), which are mandatory now, will be cancelled and merged with the ID cards, Saqr Ghobash Saeed Ghobash, UAE Minister of Labour, said on Tuesday.

“There is no need for people to carry many cards. The work permit will be merged with the EIDA’s ID card. Once we are advised or asked by the EIDA to do so, we will cancel the labour cards,” he told Khaleej Times on the sidelines of a conference held as part of the National Day celebrations. The minister said the labour card will be cancelled after the successful implementation of the ID project and registering all the residents of the country. According to the EIDA, the project is likely to be completed in mid-2012.
