The operation of the turbines was part of the first phase of Al Hamriya’s main plant of electricity generation which produces 200 megawatt a day. With expansion of such plant, the total quantity of power produced by all electricity generation plants in Sharjah has risen to 1900 MW a day.

The new turbines were connected with energy distribution networks in Sharjah city, Sajja district and Al Hamriya port to cover these areas and other affected places in the emirate.

Speaking to Khaleej Times, Ali Abdullah Al Noman, Director General of Sewa, said that the first phase of Al Hamriya power generation plant was achieved under instruction of His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, who has always been concerned about Sewa projects which enhance water, gas and power supplies to the public in the emirate.

He explained that after the completion of all the phases of the plant, the total production of power will reach 2,500 MW a day. This new power plant would be a great achievement in terms of electricity supply to all parts of the emirate, he commented.

Al Noman pointed out that the first phase also includes installation of four gas turbines to produce 400 MW. The first two turbines were already installed last month, but the other two will be installed next year.

He added that Sewa is executing its projects based on its fifth plan which ensure the current and future needs of electricity supply in the emirate. Answering a question on water scarcity problem in Sharjah, Al Noman said that Sewa is currently working on projects that would increase the water production capabilities of the desalination plants in Sharjah to be able to produce 108 million gallons a day.
