According to Colonel Gharib Shabaan, Director of the Department, the new fire stations will help a great deal in minimising the loss of property and lives in these areas and places around them. These stations will be equipped with more advanced equipment such as fire trucks equipped with advanced technological hose reels and water tanks to battle fires.
He said that the Ministry of Interior and Sharjah Government have made great efforts in initiating these stations built at a cost of Dh6m each.
Col. Shabaaan said that as part of future plans, the department will establish more stations in Al Walia, Debbah AL Hisn, Wadi Al Hillow, Al Ghail, Kalba and Al Nahda areas. Besides these yet another one will be built near Khawaneej Bridge to cover new districts Wasit and Nahwi as well as the eastern part of the emirate. "These station will include fire trucks, ambulances and supply vehicles," he said.
Col. Shabban said that the industrial areas, which are the most hit by fire accidents, will benefit a great deal from these fire stations which will help minimise damage to property and loss of lives.
He said fire accidents during this year soared to 217 due to the continuous increase in the number of the residents coming from various cultures and backgrounds and the expansion in business and investment in various parts of the emirate.
he Sharjah Police and Civil Defence officers are working shoulder to shoulder to minimise fire accidents and ensure peace and security in the emirate in particular, and the country in general.
Col. Shabban pointed that 76 deaths in 151 fire accidents in residential buildings and commercial and industrial areas were recorded during 2004, in addition to 15 fire accidents that took place in farms, schools and at the airport.
He said that the department was also continuing to communicate with the public through its safety and security awareness programmes which feature distribution of publications and pamphlets and flyers which highlight the importance of safety procedures in the workplace as well as residential areas to prevent fires.
