Symposium on combating environment crimes opens

ABU DHABI — A symposium on combating environmental crimes opened in the capital yesterday, with a call to preserve the environment as a means to achieve progress and stability in society.

The two-day symposium was inaugurated by Major-General Saif Al Shaafar, Under-Secretary of the Interior Ministry. The opening was attended by senior Interior Ministry officials as well as experts from Arab and foreign countries, who are taking part in the event.

Maj.-Gen. Al Shaafar said that the environment had been given great attention by late president Shaikh Zayed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. He said the UAE, thanks to Shaikh Zayed’s efforts, gained an advanced position in the world for its efforts aimed at protecting the environment.

He said the UAE was continuing its environmental policies under the leadership of the President, His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and his brothers Their Highnesses Members of the Supreme Council and Rulers of the Emirates.

Held under the auspices of Interior Minister Lieutenant-General Shaikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the symposium is being organised by the Officers Training Institute in cooperation with the Police Research and Studies Centre at the Abu Dhabi General Police Headquarters.

On the first day of the sympiusm yesterday, the various crimes committed against the environment were discussed by Dr Maryam Hasan Al Shanasi of Sharjah University. The environment from an Islamic perspective was presented by Dr Mohammed Yaseen Al Rifai of Abu Dhabi Police.

Brigadier Dr Mohammed bin Fahd of the Zayed Prize for the Environment spoke about the environment in the thought of Shaikh Zayed.

A special emphasis was laid on the UAE educational curriculums and the environment in a presentation by Dr Iad Jaber Kubeh.

Today’s discussions will focus on means to combat crimes against the environment, the role of the media, the role of society in fighting environmental crimes, UAE laws to combat environmental crimes and other issues.

Maj.-Gen. Al Shaafar said recommendations of the symposium would be taken by the Interior Ministry to be implemented in cooperation with other agencies in the country.
