Stop unhealthy practice of bunking

CHILDREN bunking school and employees going on French leave just before a government-declared holiday is a common phenomenon in the country. And so it happened in the days preceding the Eid Al Fitr holidays, when absenteeism in schools recorded a high of 70 per cent. Students bunked class through the week even though Eid was scheduled only towards the weekend.

And every time this happens, one hears or reads about measures that would be initiated to curb such practice. The only way, we believe, that this unhealthy practice can be stopped is through taking into account such intentional absence indulged in by employees, at the time of performance appraisal or when the employee is due for promotion. This should prove to be a deterrent.

As for the children, it is imperative that they inculcate a sense of responsibility right from the beginning and refrain from indulging in such practices. They should be made aware of the fact that education gets priority and not sitting glued to television sets, and this can be done only if the adults themselves behave in a responsible manner.
