The Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA) will be adding 22 intercity buses to its fleet, cutting the waiting time for over 20,000 passengers who use the shuttle service daily.
With the addition, the SRTA will have a total of 167 intercity buses, 103 of which are run by the agency while the rest are operated by its partners, Abdulaziz Al Jarwan, director for transport affairs at the SRTA, told Khaleej Times. This public transport service runs on 16 routes and covers 56,000 kilometres every day.
All the new buses will depart from Al Jubail bus station opposite the fish market and will head to different destinations, he added.
"The new spacious buses will give a boost to the public shuttle service we provide ... They are all air-conditioned with comfortable seats, an advanced alarm system and LCD screens that display the trip's data," Al Jarwan said.
Yusuf Sulaiman Al Hammadi, head of the procurement and administrative services and chair of the bus examination committee, said all the buses were fitted with four internal and external CCTV cameras; a special camera that guides drivers while driving ahead or in reverse; and a warning system that triggers alerts when drivers are going off the track.
For the passengers' convenience, "every seat is fitted with a special reading light, electrical outlets for charging computers and smartphones, a volume control system similar to that in an aircraft, and smoke detectors", Al Hammadi said.
"The new buses also have spacious lockers and are equipped with door sensors that halt any unexpected closure."
