The Sharjah Municipality has decided to install 600 sophisticated pre-paid parking machines throughout the emirate, according to the Director-General of Sharjah Municipality Abdullah Al Amri. Addressing the Press yesterday, Osman Al Marzouqi, Head of the Parking Section of the Municipality, said the first batch of 240 machines will be installed in Al Gubaibah, Al Manakh, Al Qassimiya, Abu Shagara, Al Majaz One and Al Majaz 2, as well as Jamal Abdul Nasir, King Faisal and King Abdul Aziz Roads and the Al Guwair Area and Extension of Al Buhaira Corniche.
He added that the new machines, which are being installed at a cost of Dh29 million, are more advanced than the old ones. These would be connected with the municipality's main control room on its premises and will report any defects, or defaults, or damage caused to any machine.
The new machines will also allow customers who don't carry money with them to use their mobile phone to make parking fee payments by dialling a specific number that will allow them to enter the number of parking hours and then press ok. The money will be charged by Etisalat in the regular phone bills. The machine, when it gets filled with coins, will automatically inform the collector by sending him an SMS.
