‘Sharjah slasher’ is looking for lawyer
SHARJAH — Sri Lankan Jude Pereira, the so called Sharjah slasher, yesterday appeared before the Sharjah Sharia Court for the second hearing session which continued for about 15 minutes.
While the first session held on June 13 was postponed for a week, the second session of yesterday was held in the absence of the accused’s lawyer and of the witnesses and victims of the alleged slasher, according to court sources.
The 28 year-old Jude was arrested on March 14 by Sharjah Police on charges of attacking four women with a sharp object and causing them injuries. He was referred by Sharjah Public Prosecution to Sharjah Shariah court a month ago after the completion of interrogation. He is being tried on the charges of assault.
Sources at the courts told Khaleej Times yesterday said that the court had postponed the trial because Jude had no lawyer to defend him .
Similarly no lawyer was present to defend Jude in the second session which was chaired by Judge Ahmed Al Sarri and lasted for a short time. Yesterday’s hearing was also not attended by any representative from the Sri Lankan Consulate in Dubai.
The sources said that the court is ready to accept any lawyer who volunteer to defend the accused.
The slasher, known by the police guards at the court by Zorro (which means fox in Spanish) was wearing a black shirt and white trousers and was handcuffed. Escorted by the police guards to and from the court rooms, Jude appeared to be normal, confident and healthy. He was smiling to people looking at him in the court corridors. The alleged stalker smiled at this reporter when she approached him for his comment, but was prevented by the guards from talking to him.
Earlier, the stalker was referred to a psychiatric at Al Amal Hospital in Dubai to check his mental health. An official source at Al Amal Hospital told this paper earlier the medical check-up has proved that the Jude who was working as computer engineer, was not mentally ill, but suffers from epilepsy.
Officials at Sharjah Public Prosecution and courts are all instructed not to give any information to the Press without a prior permission from the Ministry of Justice.
