The municipality on Thursday signed a contract with Al Dehri Group General Contractors to execute the project. It is expected to be completed in 12 months.

The ground floor would house shops, while the remaining nine storeys would have 1,681 parking spaces. Dr Salah Taher Al Haj, Director-General of the municipality, told reporters that the civic body would set apart around Dh200 million in its budget every year for building multi-storey parking facilities until the shortage of parking spaces in the emirate is solved.

Abdrahman Ahmed Al Mahmoud, Director of the Transport and Communication Department, said Dh125 million has been dedicated for building five multi-storey parking facilities. The municipality plans to increase the number of multi-storey parking facilities in the emirate to 25, especially in areas like Al Majaz, Al Qasimiya and Abu Shagara.

The five parking facilities in the most congested residential areas would be built by the beginning of 2009, he said.

Three of these facilities are being built in Abu Shagara, each with a capacity of 1,500 vehicles. Another facility being built in Al Qasimiya would have 1,300 parking spaces and the other in Al Majaz would have 880 spaces.

Shortage of parking spaces is the most acute in Abu Shagara and Al Majaz. Residents of these two areas told Khaleej Times that they have started parking their cars in neighbouring places in the evening and take taxis to get home.
