With effect from today Sewa will intensify inspections of water tanks in residential and commercial buildings in all parts of Sharjah.

The inspections would focus on cleanliness of pump rooms, quality of water, tank covers and also ensure that there are no unauthorised connections. The campaign is aimed at ensuring supply of clean and hygienic water in order to protect public health.

The owners of buildings have been warned not to use unauthorised water connections. Violators would be fined Dh2,000.

Speaking to Khaleej Times, Sewa Director-General Engineer Al Waleed bin Khadem said that during recent inspections carried out by the Directorate-General of Water at Sewa, 450 sites, including commercial and residential buildings in the emirate, were found violating the regulations in terms of water pollution and negligence in cleaning the water tanks.

Of late, Sewa has been receiving a number of complaints from residents regarding the poor quality of water. In some cases, the residents claim that there is a change in the colour of the water, which also carries foul smell.

Sewa now has ordered all owners to assign tank cleaning companies approved by Sewa to conduct cleaning and maintenance of water tanks after every six months.
