According to residents, stagnant water has led to unbearable stench and it has turned out to be a breeding ground for mosquitoes and flies.

The unhygienic conditions have also affected business in the commercial areas as parking lots and entrances to shops have remained water-logged.

Saif Hamad, an Al Nuaimia resident, urged the Ajman Municipality to find a solution to the problem as quickly as possible.

Fatima Arafah, another resident, said, “It’s quite difficult to walk along the roads because of the mess. It’s also unsafe for elderly people to go out for a walk.”

AbuZar, owner of a commercial shop, said mud and stagnant water have blocked the entrance to his shop and this eventually has affected his business as customers prefer to visit other shops in such a situation.

Saif Al Shamsi, Deputy Director-General of the Ajman Municipality, said the civic body is taking all the necessary steps to tackle the problem. It has sent vehicles to pump out water from the affected areas.

The municipality is also taking various precautionary measures to prevent such mess as more showers are expected in the next few days.

Employees of the Works Section have also been asked to work round the clock to repair the roads damaged by the rain, he added. “Workers are trying their best to pump out the water that disrupted traffic and blocked main roads.”

“The work on improving the drainage system is also being carried out in various residential areas and the sewerage project will solve this problem,” added Al Shamsi.
