The Awards were launched last year to honour the best among RTA’s dozens of contractors and consultants for implementing the highest safety standards. The target of the occupational safety awards is ‘zero accidents’ and those with the least number of accidents and hazards walk away with the top prizes.

Divided in two categories, the 2010 edition of the awards - which was held on Wednesday at the RTA Head Office – honoured the best consultant and the best contractor.

Engineering and Construction giant Parsons International Ltd. went away with Best Consultant honours followed by Systra-Parsons who finished runner-up in the same category.

The builders of Dubai Metro, DURL consortium, won the Safety Award for the contractors and Emirates Driving Institute came a close second in this category.

Honouring the awardees Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the RTA said: “RTA is assigning paramount importance to the occupational safety issue in all projects. This attention has been translated into the establishing of special Quality, Health, Safety & Environment Units within all RTA’s operational agencies which are directly taking care of safety and security assurance procedures.”

He also said the awards is one of the incentives for the companies to achieve the safety standards.

The Authority also awarded some of its agencies for making sure the safety measures are implemented in their area of work. The Traffic and Roads Agency, Rail Agency as well as Corporate Technical Support Services Agency bagged the honours for doing the good job.

RTA has constituted a dedicated team of experts from its staff to choose the awardees based on set criteria.
