Violators were fined Dh20,000 to Dh100,000 for each case
Following complaints from residents in the emirate about women knocking on doors asking for money and then stealing valuables and some indulging in prostitution, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) launched a crackdown.
A top official of the CID told Khaleej Times that some of these women, of various nationalities, knocked on the doors of apartments telling residents, particularly housewives, that they had the power to cure diseases and perform miracles. Some others offered sex when they found bachelors in the apartments.
During interrogation, it was found that most of these women had entered the country on visit visas. Some of the arrested had previous records of deportation but had managed to enter the country illegally through neighbouring countries, the official said.
