Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap, who was special guest at the grand opening of Philippine Supermarket in Muraqqabat and one of the importers of bananas and pineapples in Dubai, said that from January to October this year alone, the Philippines exported $10.5 million worth of fresh Cavendish bananas and $1.8 million worth of golden sweet pineapples.

In 2008, he said some $11.2 million worth of Cavendish bananas and $1.5 million worth of golden sweet pineapples left the port of Davao City for
the UAE.

Gil Herico, trade and agriculture attaché at the Philippine mission here, said 98 per cent of the imported bananas in the UAE market come from the Philippines, and even those for distribution to other GCC countries passing through Dubai total more than $100 million.

He said that golden sweet pineapples arriving in UAE for shipment to other GCC countries reach $4 million.

He also said that Philippine mango is the third fruit exported to UAE and as of this year, it totals $100,000.
