Indian expatriate Baskaran Velayudhan, from Malappuram district in Kerala is dying out of hunger and has no place to stay in Dubai.
The 50-year-old is fighting for the settlement of his end of service benefits like gratuity and two months pending salary for 11 months now.
An emotional Baskaran told Khaleej Times: "I have no option left but to die. I am surviving on loans I have borrowed from people and facing tough time without food and no accommodation. Some friends are helping me and now I am living in a store room provided by a friend".
Baskaran was employed as curtain tailor with Roza Furniture Factory LLC owned by a Syrian since 1996. Around fifteen years back he met with a disastrous accident when he was travelling in company's vehicle for work. He was hospitalised for more than a month and went through surgeries. In the accident one of his legs and hands were partially paralysed, he still has a rod and around 15 screws in his hip bone and faces difficulty in walking.
"I have worked for this company for twenty years and never asked for anything not even the hospital expenses at the time of my accident. Last year, I requested them to relieve me and settle my dues but when I didn't get any response I filed a case with Dubai court. Now, according to Dubai court's order they are supposed to pay me Dh24,000 but they are not even taking my calls. I am jobless, in debt and helpless".
"I have diabetes, blood pressure and pain in the injured leg as I slipped few days back. It is difficult to arrange one square meal a day for me - how will I take care of the medical bills".
Now the same sponsor is running another company with same business in the name of his daughter in Dubai. When we spoke to the company's daughter she said "how can I trust whether you are actually speaking from Khaleej Times".
Though later she agreed over the phone on sharing her side of the story via mail but didn't respond.
India's National Domestic Workers Movement (NDWM)/Migrant Forum, Tamil Nadu wants Indian Consulate in Dubai to proceed with the case and support Baskaran. The forum also wants Ministry of External Affairs in India to give him legal assistance in Dubai to get justice in this case.
