The gadget is already a hit with users who have been waiting five months for it to land in the UAE. It was launched in the United States in June.

The price tag has not deterred buyers. “The price is right up there with other high-end handsets. In fact, the prices from both du and etisalat, are below grey market prices and that’s one reason why it’s so exciting,” said Magnus Nystedt, managing editor of Shufflemagazine

The iPhone 3GS has almost 100 new features and some who bought it are still downloading them. Its intuitive touch interface and graphics have impressed users.

It has a “mind-blowing amount of usability and a ridiculously extensive application list”, said Catboy, Dubai 92 Breakfast Show presenter. “I spent a few days downloading as many applications as I could just to see how many aspects of my life the iPhone could ‘assist’... I’m still downloading!”

Both du and etisalat ran campaigns across the UAE earlier this month to give their customers the privilege of being among the first to own the iPhone 3GS, the fastest, most powerful iPhone yet.

However, while etisalat, has started the sale of the device, it is still to offer any data package. Even the SIM card is not being provided with the handset.

Etisalat, last Saturday, announced that consumers can buy the 32GB iPhone 3GS for Dh2,799 and pay Dh2,399 for the 16GB model.

Du had announced the prices of the 3GS last week. It offers four one-year free data packages for the same models while prices mentioned on its web site are Dh2,869 for 32GB and Dh2,459 16GB.
