Specifically targeting the Asians, these crooks stand near the gates of the court and lure people either by promising them a very good lawyer to take up their case or by assuring them a quick end to their cases, and charge them quite a good sum against their “services”.

Advocate Abu Baker said that these middlemen are cheating people, especially the less educated Asian labourers, who do not know the Arabic language or the court procedures.

These people do not have the licence to provide any such service, and some of them are on a visit visa, he said, adding that they take advantage of the innocence of the less educated people, by charging for the “valuable services” they provide. Although the fact is that they have no say in these issues, he asserted.

Abu Bakar said that the workers must avoid these middlemen and take their cases to the lawyers’ offices. He said in the court premises, there are information desks which can advise them on court procedures. This kind of practice by unauthorised persons is internationally prohibited, he said, adding that the concerned authorities should take legal action against them, he demanded.

Lawyer Ahmed Abdul Rasool admitted that this kind of illegal practice is going on and said that he knew two Indian nationals who frequented areas near the courts and cheated some people. However, complaints were filed against them with the legal authorities and lately their activities were curbed, he said.

Sheref, another lawyer, however, has different views on the role of these middlemen. He believes that this is a source of income for these middlemen and it does not pose any threat to the court system.
