Students who visited the Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF) were given tips on how learning to focus can help with their studies, improve their attention span and lead to the development of their personalities.
"Once a person reaches 14 years of age their brain is 'programmed' for life and they will stay that way even until the age of 80," said K.A. Sebastian, who delivered a lecture on Transactional Analysis on Friday.
"Transactional analysis enables you to reprogramme your brain. It enables you to upgrade your mind in the same way you can upgrade the operating software of a computer. It helps to explore our personalities and to know the hidden dynamics behind human relations," he explained.
The presenter went on to describe how a person's personality is initially formed from the role that their parents play in their lives. He described two styles, the 'controlling' parent and the 'nurturing parent'. An overly controlling parent, he said, would result in a more emotional child that will lack energy to focus properly, as the demands from strong emotions are debilitating.
"The greatest learning on earth is to learn about yourself. If change is needed, then it needs to come from within. When there is something wrong with the mind, it affects the body, so improving the mind is something everybody should do. TA helps you to know about yourself - it is the language of the mind," said Sebastian.
