The house, located in Maysaloon area, has been badly damaged, but the total loss suffered by the police officer has not been revealed by the the police and civil defence, who managed to bring the fire under control and prevented it from spreading to the neighbouring houses.

There were no casualties or injuries since no one was at home at the time of the incident, police said, adding that the maid timed the crime when everyone was out.

The money she stole was from the wallet of the officer’s sister, which she had left in a cupboard in one of the bedrooms. The maid, whose name has been withheld, had been working with the family for a long time.

The police officer said he couldn't believe that such a crime could take place in his house. “The maid committed the crime without hesitation or fear, fully knowing that I am a ranking officer with Sharjah Police," he said.

He pointed out that the maid, who was on the family's sponsorship, had served the family for a long time, and had not shown any criminal tendency in the past.

Police said investigations were on, and a search had been mounted for the maid, who is still suspected to be in the country.
