Labour ministry responds

WE HAD published in this column on June 1 the need for the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs to change the work schedule of workers of contracting companies sweating it out in the open during summers under the scorching summer sun. We had also highlighted that the worst period during summer were the months of July and August, and had sought suspension of work during these months between 12 noon and 4 pm, when the sun blazes away. Besides, we had also suggested that workers in such open sites be provided cold water and other means of protection from the heat.

The response came yesterday in the form of an announcement by the Minister of Labour and Social Affairs Dr Ali bin Abdullah Al Kaabi, who issued a decree banning field work in open sites between 12.30pm and 4.30pm effective July 1.

The decree is undoubtedly in conformation with rules and regulations which call for preserving peoples’ lives. In this context, we would like to highlight the fact that over 700 cases of sun-stroke or exhaustion due to soaring temperatures are reported at the emergency sections of hospitals during the two month period. And most of them admitted are field workers.
