This was affirmed by renowned Islamic scholar M. M. Akbar as part of the cultural programme for foreign communities at the 11th Ramadan Forum in Al Twar-2 area on Wednesday night.

In his speech on ‘Islam the Religion of Mercy and Justice’, the famous orator said the suicidal tendency among soldiers deployed in the Middle East, the biggest issue faced by the Pentagon which claims that it would implement justice throughout the world, was really thought provoking.

“One veteran military personnel commits suicide in every 80 minutes. This is, for sure, due to their failure in doing justice to their own consciences. The World Health Organisation’s recent figures show that 20 million people attempt suicide and one million of them die in a year,” he said.

“With the spate of divorce cases and shattered families, violence and insurgencies flaring up because of social and political injustice on one hand and the direct and indirect broadside launched by the superpowers on the third world on the other, life is becoming more and more perilous each passing day.”

Showing a way out, Sheikh Akbar said Islam stands distinguished in this area as it gives the individual clear guidelines on doing justice to his body as well as mind and leading a peaceful life amidst his family and society by discharging duties and relishing rights.

“Islamic law shows mercy to the individual, family and society and assures peace to all who abide by it. Islam teaches mankind to behave with his fellow human beings with mercy by creating a deep belief in the Creator, who always bestows mercy upon his creatures.” Further, Sheikh Akbar said Islam also inspires man to keep himself away from all evil deeds that make the life of fellow human beings hard, by warning about punishment after death that withdraws the divine mercy.

“Islam is able to form a healthy individual, healthy family and healthy society by implementing laws that consider biological, emotional and spiritual urges of human beings,” he said, noting that the credit of the success of Islam in providing peace both in theory and practice goes to the fact that it is based on justice and mercy.
