Leading the conversation with the rising political tensions between India and Pakistan, ministers, thought leaders and experts have explored sustainable solutions for promoting peace and prosperity in South Asia during a conclave in Dubai. The Wion Global Summit titled 'Unleashing the Power of South Asia' kicked off in Dubai on Wednesday.

Following the terror attack on a convoy of vehicles carrying security personnel that killed over 40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawans in Indian-administered Kashmir, political tensions between India and Pakistan have peaked. Ways to curb the growing problem of militant separatists in South Asia was the most talked about topic at the summit.

Though some speakers have advocated for starting fresh talks between India and Pakistan, some others said there couldn't be any talks "as far as terrorism is considered".

UAE-India relations

Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance, inaugurated the summit. Speaking at the opening ceremony, he said: "There is growing importance of India and South Asia in the global economy to have a strategic approach for unleashing the region's huge potential."

He said the UAE plays a critical role in regional and global security. "We are major participants in the global energy sector. Our economy is well situated to function in a global society, providing an environment for economic and global cooperation. Furthermore, the UAE is active in promoting social and economic development in the region and the world."

Sheikh Nahyan said unleashing the power of the South Asian region requires hard work, cooperation, creativity, transparency and competitiveness to create stable societies. "The challenge in the summit is to ask the right questions. We require major structural changes in trade and private investment, social policies, local development, promote ethical transactions and wide institutional participation in economic activities."

He also said it was essential to create a "thoughtful analysis and creative approach" to addressing these challenges and attain more integration and cooperation in the region. "We are in celebration of 2019, the Year of Tolerance. We are proud that all of our residents live in communities with open access to each other and are free to practise religions. This openness guarantees easy access of harmony and peace to all."
