The Foundation started giving away free foodstuff coupons to under-privileged people from August 14 onwards in order to provide some relief to them in the wake of steep rises in prices of essential commodities.

The Foundation has so far distributed a few thousand free foodstuff coupons to people in different emirates.

In the first phase of the drive which entails distribution of 40,000 coupons, around 37,000 coupons are earmarked for nationals and 3,000 for foreigners residing in the country.

Talking to Khaleej Times, the Emirati applicants lauded the initiative of the Foundation, saying it would help meet their foodstuff requirements for the holy month of Ramadan.

An official of Foundation said, "We are now dealing with nationals. Once we finish with them, we'll be giving away relief to others."

The distribution of free coupons will continue for two months, an official said. "The Foundation has purchased over 12,000 tonnes of foodstuff to be distributed among residents for free, said Mohamed Haji Al Khoori, Executive Director at the Foundation.

Till Monday, the Foundation had distributed 2,291 coupons among nationals at various designated centres in different emirates of the country.
