Students in Dubai are enjoying their last week of vacations as schools are scheduled to open next week.

However, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) suggests that students might be able to enjoy an extra day off before they return to their classes.

The KHDA, after being flooded with queries on whether Sunday, September 1 would be a holiday on account of the Hijri New Year, said: "The answer might be yes!"

"Do you know what's funny? School hasn't even started yet and students are asking us for the first day off! Do you know what's even funnier? The answer might be yes! We'll let you know as soon as we do. #Hijri," the KHDA said in a tweet.

The date for Muharram 1 will be confirmed after the sighting of the moon.
