By responding to only 12 questions, including the type of health insurance plan one requires – basic, enhanced or visitor - the general public, employers and brokers can access over 1,500 approved insurance products offered by 35 authorised health insurance companies in the Abu Dhabi emirate.

“Providing affordable access to quality healthcare is one of our main objectives at HAAD, the launch of the health insurance products search engine is a tool that provides a new level of transparency about accredited insurance products and enables customers to make well informed choices,” Zaid AL Siksek, CEO of HAAD, said in a statement. Creating ‘customer transparency’ is part of the local health authority’s priorities at its 2010 - 2014 strategic plans, added the statement.

The health insurance search engine is free-of-charge and will be helpful for individuals looking for private insurance for their families, small businesses, employees wanting to know more about the coverage options available, or HR managers searching for the right package to offer their employees noted Dr Finn Goldner, Director of Health System Financing at HAAD.

Other health insurance products query included customer choice of annual health insurance coverage, type of inpatient room, maternity coverage, outpatient fees for general practitioners and specialists visits and medicine coverage on local and international levels. Furthermore, the search engine allows the user to enter a key word to search for a specific health treatment that is normally offered by a limited number of insurance companies.

According to HAAD figures, insurance contracts in the emirate have reached 2.2 million in 2009, more than Abu Dhabi’s 1.9 million residents.

The health authority’s 2009 statistics also showed that more than 95 per cent of expatriates have health insurance while over 95 percent of UAE nationals have comprehensive medical coverage through the Thiqa programme.
