Some petrol stations and shops distributed their stock of icecream free to customers instead of allowing it to melt in the freezers.

An attendant at an Eppco petrol station said that they found that the icecream in their main freezer had begun melting and quickly gave away the remaining icecream in smaller freezers. People who could not fill their car tanks with petrol because of power failure, enjoyed the free treats, he said.

It is definitely easy to give it away in solid form than to clean the liquid icecream from the freezer.

Haagen Dazs had some wastage, but they sent most of their stocks to the cold store in refrigerated trucks. Some of its shops didn't have electricity till late afternoon, an official said.

Baskin Robbins saved their icecream stock by concealing it totally by covering the jars with lids. If secured properly, icecream can stay intact for four to six hours in the deep freezer, a parlour incharge said late afternoon, adding that they were to shift their icecream cakes to the cold stores before they would melt.
