According to Jean Jacques Gatein, director of Alliance Francaise, the Iftar was part of the institute's Five Nights of Ramadan programme, which started on October 1, with 24 Hours of Television, a documentary showing the best moments of French television.

The next event for the French Ramadan night will be a live concert of Arabic music. On October 11, at 9 pm, Anees Al Nahdi will perform at the Alliance Francaise, accompanied by Reebal Al Khateeb, Amer AG and Mohammed Dohai. Nahdi, who is a UAE national born in Abu Dhabi, will sing mainly songs from the Gulf area, but he has also composed a few French musical surprises.

October 15 will feature the Alliance's fourth Ramadan event. This time, it will be a cinematic night with the Alliance slated to screen from 9pm, The Kite, a film by Randa Chahal Sabbagh, which won the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 2003. The Kite is about the challenges faced by a young girl who lives in a village on the border between Lebanon and Israel.

How the French see the Germans? is a documentary film which will conclude the Five Nights of Ramadan programme. It will be shown on October 18, also at the Alliance Francaise, at 9pm. The documentary will be followed by a debate regarding the historical implications of Germany having a woman leader for the first time. To spice up the evening, German food will be served.

Gatein explained that the Five Nights of Ramadan are meant to remind us of what are our origins, our beliefs and our artistic tastes. "Ramadan nights are conducted in the spirit of opening up and discovering the others," said the director of Alliance Francaise.
