The workers of the company, owned by an Arab expatriate, were caught red-handed by the municipality's security section and the police while disposing of the wastes yesterday.
The company did so, municipality sources said, to avoid paying fees to the municipality to help them get rid of such wastes which are hazardous and dangerous to the environment.
The toxic materials are used by the company to manufacture and paint metals.
Al Kabi told Khaleej Times that following a tip-off from a factory source, the police were notified.
Municipal security officials along with CID officers followed a pick-up van transporting the toxic wastes to the sea and the desert in Al Batayeh district.
The workers were caught red-handed releasing the wastes into the sea near Al Mamzar and later burying the rest in the desert.
When the municipal inspectors raided the factory, they found a large quantity of the wastes kept ready for disposal.
The municipality confiscated all the toxic and chemical wastes.
The case was referred to Dr Salah Al Haj, Director-General of Sharjah Municipality, who immediately ordered to shut down the factory.
The municipality, through the police, has referred the case to the public prosecution as it is a criminal act.
During interrogation, the safety and security manager of the company said he was forced by the company officials to do so and that he had been disposing of the wastes in the same manner since the factory was established a few years ago.
Hassan Al Fataq, Head of the Environment Protection and Services at the municipality, said the materials are very dangerous and poisonous and it could affect the marine lives. Besides, the wastes buried in the desert could pollute the ground water which also could kill human beings and animals.
