Experts discuss ways to check plastic bag use

DUBAI - The ways to discontinue use of polythene and plastic bags and protect the environment were discussed at a meeting organised by the Ministry of Environment and Water in Dubai.

The meeting was attended by plastic bag manufacturers, retail market owners, representatives of recycling plants, waste management experts, municipality executives and ministry officials.

The participants discussed the proposed plan to reduce the use of polythene bags by 15 per cent every year until the country gets rid of it completely.

The meeting was chaired by the acting assistant under-secretary for fisheries affairs at the ministry, Abdullah bin Rashid Al Mualla.

The topics discussed included use of shopping bags, recycling of plastic products and the possibility of plastic manufacturing plants opting for alternative products.

Experts from the Dubai Municipality also presented the theme of converting waste into energy. The past experience of the municipality was drawn as example to substantiate the proposal.
