This was disclosed in the latest newsletter from World Nuclear News (WNN), the information service supported by the World Nuclear Association and the World Nuclear University, both headquartered in London.

The officials of the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC), the organisation charged with implementing the UAE nuclear energy programme, confirmed the deal between KEPCO and Doosan. “We are aware of the deal. Doosan was part of the KEPCO-led Korean consortium, which had won the contract for building the first batch of nuclear reactors in the UAE. Now they have finalised the deal between them,’’ Fahad Al Qahtani, Media Relations Manager of ENEC told Khaleej Times here.

ENEC had placed a $20 billion order with a consortium of South Korean companies for the construction of four reactors, each with a capacity of 1400 mw, in the UAE, in December 2009.

The contract marked South Korea’s first overseas order for commercial nuclear reactors, WNN report said .

Under the order, KEPCO will provide the “full scope of works and services”, including engineering, procurement, construction, nuclear fuel and operations and maintenance support. The contract had mentioned that KEPCO will be assisted by its own subsidiaries and the other consortium members — Samsung, Hyundai Engineering and Doosan in building the reactors in the UAE.Doosan will now supply the major components for all the four reactors.

ENEC announced in April that it had identified Braka near Ruwais in the western region of Abu Dhabi as the tentative site for the first nuclear power station in the UAE.

ENEC has applied to the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) for a limited licence to “manufacture and assemble nuclear safety related equipment.”

ENEC had requested FANR to approve the limited licence by July 5. This licence will enable Doosan to make the reactor pressure vessel, steam generators, pressurisers and coolant pumps. ENEC was anticipating to start some of the manufacturing later this year for these long-lead items, the WNN reported.

Ambassador Hamad Al Kaabi, the UAE’s permanent representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), had earlier told Khaleej Times that the application for this licence was ‘under process’ with the FANR.

The first unit Braka 1 is slated to operate in 2017, with its three sister plants following at one-year intervals.

As per the KEPCO’s deal with ENEC Braka will have APR1400 type reactors which are evolutionary Generation III pressurised water reactors principally designed by KEPCO. They offer enhanced seismic safety and have a 60-year design life.
