This was announced by Khaulah Al Noman, Director-General, the Sharjah Department of Public works.
The Dh496 million King Abdul Aziz street project will consist of five phases. The first four phases will consist of multiple roads that will also be divided into three lanes of 14 kilometres both ways.
It will also include 13 intersections such as bridges and tunnels in order to ease traffic congestion.
The first phase of the project will be constructed at a cost of Dh68 million, Al Noman said.
The fifth phase of the project is allocated for improvement and reconstruction of Al Wahda Street. Construction will start at the intersection of King Abdul Aziz Road and King Faisal Road and continue up to the Cultural Roundabout.
She pointed out that this phase also includes the construction of flyovers on King Abdul Aziz Road at the Shaikh Juma Al Muttawa intersection, consisting of three exits.
It will also include fixing of cement barrier to divide the traffic movement, in addition to a tunnel.
The new King Abdul Aziz Road in the Abu Shagara area will have an intersection consisting of three exits, a flyover and a tunnel.
"The Department also allocated Dh395 million to carry out the second phase of the Sharjah Ring Road connecting Sharjah with Ajman, in order to ease traffic movement, specifically in Al Arouba Street," she added.
Al Noman said that construction on the new King Abdul Aziz Road will start from the Sharjah-Kalba Road near the University City up to the government buildings in Al Layyeh, by constructing a new road passing through the Industrial Area towards Green Belt Street.
The current King Abdul Aziz Road next to King Faisal Mosque will be reconstructed and connected with a new road being built, which will pass through Sharjah Creek where a bridge will be built, heading towards Al Layyeh. The new King Abdul Aziz Road will contribute a great deal towards minimising the mounting traffic congestion in the middle of the city and in the industrial area.
The new road will transfer the traffic movement from Sharjah Ring Road and Sharjah-Kalba Street, and enable motorists to drive directly towards King Abdul Aziz Road, which will extend from Al Maleha to the Sharjah Ring Road.
The first phase will consist of multiple roads with three exits at a length of 5km, in addition to three bridges, that will connect the Sharjah Ring Road with the Sharjah-Kalba Road.
