The accused, who is standing trial now, is Croatian Zevanovitch Andrea. He was arrested abroad a few months ago following close coordination between the Dubai Police and the International Interpol. He was later extradited to Dubai.
Andrea, and another person who is still at large, are accused of robbing Watch Land store at Burjuman, and Ahmed Seddiqi and Sons shop at Wafi centre on March 10, 2006. Andrea is accused of providing the other accused the tools for the crime, including masks and sharp metals.
On the night of the incident, the two accused went to the two shops on a motorbike. They entered the shops after breaking the glass windows with a hammer and stole jewellery watches worth millions of dirhams.
The operations manager at the stores, Mohammed Seddiqi, told the interrogators that he received a telephone call around 5.30am. “My cousin informed me over the phone that our stores at Burjuman and Wafi had been robbed. These stores are owned by my grandfather, Ahmed Seddiqi,” he said.
The witness went to Watch Land shop at Burjuman and saw police officers and forensic experts taking fingerprints and questioning people. “The broken glasses were scattered everywhere. I believe the jewellery watches stolen from that shop alone are worth more than Dh20 million,” he said.
Another woman accused was already convicted in the case. The Serbian national was sentenced to three years in jail followed by deportation for possessing the stolen watches.
