Abu Dhabi — The Abu Dhabi City Municipality, in cooperation with the Baniyas Police Station, Department of Economic Development and the Waste Management Centre (Tadweer), has launched a campaign targeting unlicensed sellers of livestock near the Baniyas Slaughterhouse. The municipality launched the campaign in collaboration with strategic partners in response to the illegal practice by street vendors, especially those engaged in the illegal selling goats and other livestock. Animals on sale are not subject to veterinary inspection and monitoring before being slaughtered for consumption. Moreover, the display and selling of animals are conducted in unhygienic conditions.
The municipality has spotted an increasing number of livestock traders, resulting in accumulated waste of animals and other refuses, marring the appearance of the city. These wastes are a perfect breeding ground for the spread of germs and diseases, and pollute the surroundings of the slaughterhouse.
Al Wathba Municipal Centre’s campaign resulted in the seizure of 71 goats. These goats have been handed over to the Baniyas Slaughterhouse for the benefit of the Red Crescent Authority.
The campaign inspectors served warnings to four vendors who were selling livestock illegally. Other teams attended to removing the waste generated by the practice.
The campaign has resulted in a number of suggestions to curb the practice, including the installation of signs in targeted areas to raise the awareness of the community about the importance of cooperating with the municipality.
