Bootlegger gets 8-month jail

DUBAI — A 23-year-old Qassim S. S. (Indian) has been sentenced by the Dubai Criminal Court to eight months in jail for bootlegging and resisting law enforcement authority personnel while on duty.

The defendant, who came to the country on a visit visa, used a car parked in a sandy parking lot as a bar. He kept 12 bottles of liquor under the motor vehicle, selling the contraband to his customers.

CID personnel saw the man standing near the car, his movement arousing suspicion. The cops asked him to produce his identity card. Instead, he resisted them and tried to run away after assaulting a policeman, whom he hurt in his hand. Cops, however, overpowered him, and on searching him, recovered two bottles of alcohol.

Upon interrogation, he confessed to the charge, and showed the cops the other quantity he hid beneath the car.

He was remanded to police custody before being referred to the court, which ordered him to remain in jail for eight months.
