Pakistan People's Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Wednesday inaugurated Karachi's Trauma Centre built at a cost of Rs6 billion, amid controversy over reported death of a 10-month-old girl as doors of one of Karachi's biggest public medical facilities, Civil Hospital, were closed as part of security measures during the visit
Bisma breathed her last after security guards refused his father entry to the Civil Hospital's emergency department for over an hour. "I brought my 10-month-old daughter who was suffering from a breathing ailment to the Civil Hospital's Emergency Ward but security guards did not allow me inside," Bisma's father told reporters.
Doors of the hospital were closed for patients and people were caught in hours-long traffic jam as part of security measures taken for the PPP chairman and Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah's visit. The PPP leaders were invited to visit a newly built trauma centre in the government facility which is most visited by the city's impoverished citizens to seek cheap medical treatment.
However, a Bilawal House spokesperson denied the news. "Bilawal Bhutto Zardari's visit lasted just for 15 to 20 minutes and the road to the trauma centre was different than that of Civil Hospital where some news channels have reported about the girl's death," Jameel Soomro said.
"Bilawal Bhutto Zardari visited the trauma centre, inaugurated and returned within 15 to 20 minutes without any traffic jams or protocol," he added.
