The event was held under the patronage of His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed AI Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah. It was attended by Shaikh Nahyan bin Mubarak AI Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and Chancellor of the Higher Colleges of Technology, in addition to members of diplomatic missions, students and academics from various universities.
Dr Farid Ohan , Director SWC, said in his address on the occasion: "This event invites our students to increase their awareness and appreciate other cultures and people. We also hope that they will realise how fortunate they are to be citizens of this wonderful country, and the responsibility they have in contributing to its development."
Among various attractions of the event were an international pavilion hall in which representatives from 23 countries set up stalls, an international food court, and an arts and crafts lane. The countries selected represent those from where the colleges' teachers come. In the pavilions hall, students setup country stands. Students also decorated the stands with images of landmarks of the representative countries.
Speaking to Khaleej Times Dr Ohan said that for the past three months, students had been engaged in all sorts of learning activities inside and outside the class. They had written essays and poetry about the theme of the event, designed web sites for the participating countries and had participated in quiz competitions. They have also woven carpet for Mosaic 2003 on the theme of love, peace and brotherhood.
Students recited Quranic verses. They also played mucsic, one of them being Beethoven's Ode to Joy, which celebrates brotherhood.
