Five months later, Donnier returned with the completed project and launched the first immersive 360° map of Dubai on videostreetview.com.

“Dubai has never been mapped in such a way before. It’s quite incredible to see the complete city from the streetview interface,” says Donnier, CEO, GlobalVision Communication. Driving around Dubai for five days in August 2009, Donnier used a re-engineered capture car to recreate the city in immersive visuals.

Complete with a mast and a 360° camera, the car was fitted with a complex GPS tracking system and computer hardware. “Although it sounds complicated, the whole system works on its own with only one person driving the car,” says Donnier who has previously mapped Geneva, Zurich and Saïgon among other cities. The Burj Khalifa, Atlantis and Burj Al Arab are among some of the landmarks that can be seen as points of interest on the video map, which uses a panda to keep track of the movement of the car. The panda can be rotated in all directions and drag-dropped anywhere to get a 360° video view at that point in the immersive video.

“It gives tourists a chance to see Dubai from the comforts of their living rooms. They can actually click on a point in the map and get a streaming 360° view of Dubai,” says Donnier who worked on the project with his team in Switzerland.

A quick search on videostreetview.com reveals the aerial map of Dubai, combined with 360° videos.

A soon to be launched mobile version of the interface will allow people to access the 360° map from anywhere and access points of interest in Dubai.

“We are going to include more areas in the future and there will be many more places to see. The idea is to promote tourism with an attempt to commercialise the map,” adds Donnier.

The company is planning to create similar maps in other countries, and Abu Dhabi is likely to get its own version in the coming months.

“We are working with companies to promote them on the map and if we see an interest in the region we will expand to other cities like Abu Dhabi,” adds Donnier.
