A matter of concern

ROAD accidents involving pedestrians run over by cars is the major cause of deaths and injuries compared to other road mishaps. This has been confirmed by no less an official than the director of the General Traffic Department of Dubai Police.

We believe that the pedestrian needs to be educated, and made aware of the dangers of the road. But at the same time, we also want to stress that there is a need to control speeds of motor vehicles, and discourage people from making those dangerous cross-overs from one side of the road to the other as if they were out on a stroll.

Fixing the speed limit depends on the nature of the street. Speed limits should be governed keeping in mind the particular street, whether the road runs through a residential area or is it a commercial district on both sides of the road, with visitors frequenting offices.

Entry and exit points should also kept in mind when fixing speed limits, and pinpointing pedestrian crossings. Secure ‘crossings’ should be provided to the pedestrians. Beefing up the number of signboards with instructions and warnings should also be part of the package.
