The arrests were made between May 1 and 30. All those arrested would be prosecuted and deported as stipulated by the country's federal law on entry and residence of foreigners, the source said.

This figure brought the total number of infiltrators arrested since the beginning of this year to 3,172. According to official statistics, 579 infiltrators were arrested in January, 414 in February, 617 in March and 700 in April.

The offenders were mainly of Asian nationalities who were trying to sneak into the country illegally. The official warned that intensive inspection raids would continue round-the-clock to crack down on illegal immigrants. He praised the tremendous efforts made by the security agencies concerned to carry out the operation to arrest the infiltrators. The number of infiltrators and illegal immigrants in the country has dropped significantly in recent years, thanks to the vigilant eye of the immigration authorities.

Ministry officials attribute the drop in the number of infiltrators to the tight measures and surveillance carried out by immigration authorities at entry outlets, border points, and on the sea, in collaboration with the other agencies concerned.

The ministry uses latest technologies in its search operations to nab infiltrators, including state-of-the-art radars that monitor the country's regional waters, helicopters and speedboats and heavy-duty vehicles.
