4.8kg of drugs seized

DUBAI - Dubai Customs recently foiled a bid to smuggle about 5kg of hashish through the Dubai Creek Entry. A senior official on Monday told Khaleej Times that the contraband valued at Dh60,000 was found hidden in plastic bags in a ship heading from an Asian country.

“The 4.8kg drugs confiscated just a few days before the Eid Al Adha holidays was meant for the local market,” said Rashid Al Dhabbah, Senior Manager of Sea Operations Department and Jebel Ali. During routine check up, customs inspectors noticed an unusual wooden board separating the oil tank from the left side of the ship.

“The crew was asked to remove the wooden board where a cloth bag containing two plastic bags was found.” During investigations, a crew member confessed that the bags contained hashish.

“The suspect and the seized goods were transferred to the Anti-Narcotics Section for legal action,” Al Dhabbah said. Protecting the economy and maintaining the safety of UAE residents are top priority for customs inspectors he noted.
